How familiar do you have to be with a guy in order to ask him to a dance?

There's this guy that I rarely talk to. I've sort of liked him for a while but we haven't started talking until recently, and it hasn't been a whole lot, since I only have one cl with him. Homecoming is coming up really soon, and I know that he hasn't gotten a date yet. I want to ask him to Homecoming (since my friends told me that it's okay for a girl to ask a guy), but would it be considered creepy or weird if some girl you don't know all that well to ask you to a dance? I've never been to Homecoming with a guy, so I don't know. What's the level of familiarity you need in order to ask someone to a dance?
